Higher Education in
India has expanded many
folds since
independence. The number
of universities has
increased from 30 to
435, colleges from 500
to 20,700, teaching
staff from a meager
15,00 to nearly 4.80
lakhs and students
population in higher
education from 1 lakh to
over 112 lakhs. Many
fold expansion in
institutional capacity
of higher education has
enhanced enrolment ratio
from less than 1% in
1950 to about 10% in
2007. The role of higher
education in national
development is well
established as it is
this level of education
which provides top level
of man power in every
field. The concept of
education itself has
gone through a sea
change in education for
Knowledge, Information,
Skills, Employment,
Livelihood, Empowerment,
Social and National
Development. The higher
education in our country
paved way to the success
stories like Green
Revolution, Space
Technology, Nuclear
Energy and Information
Technology Superiority.
These achievements
constitute the menu of
bringing a revolution in
doing the 'education'
and in 'kind of
education'. And, it is
needed, if India has to
march ahead in this age
of knowledge economy.
India can reap the
advantage of being a
young nation with its
54% of the population
being below the age of
30 years contrasting to
other development
nations who are aging
fast. This can be
achieved only if India's
youth is equipped with
quality and relevant
education. The
Universities and
research institutions
may provide competitive
edge to Indian industry
and industry may provide
on the site based
experience to students.
In my vision of the
ideal university, the
precision of technology
would blend with better
communication of
expertise and new ideas.
At the same time,
students would live in
an atmosphere that was
inspiring, stimulating,
and fun.
Allahabad Agricultural
Institute Deemed
