The Department of Anthropology was commenced in 2000, at
the Allahabad Agricultural Institute Deemed University, and offers M.Sc.
degree in Anthropology. The main focus of the Master's programme is,
Anthropology in Development, Evolutionary Anthropology and Medical
Anthropology. Agricultural Anthropology which has been Recently Introduced
is a very different study on the Agricultural Development of tribal and
backward farmers and also those farmers who are resourceless specially in
relation to technological resources. A large Number of Indian farmers fall
under this category. For the welfare of the Indian farmer and policy making
strategy with harmonious path for the farmer, students would be able to
contribute an excellent technologically sound expertise in the field of
policy making, welfare of the country and states. Among the health issues,
natural resource management and etc in the focus point of the subject.
Physical anthropology helps the students and researcher to understand the
physiology, serology, cytogenetics, population dynamics and disease. Medical
anthropology trains the students and researchers to advance the boundaries
of medical anthropology by providing knowledge regarding co-relation of
disease with culture and society, impact of stress and other cultural
aspects responsible for emergence of disease in human beings. The Department
of Anthropology is providing an strategy to work for the isolated part of
the population by discovering new facts from uneroded rocks and soil. Field
work training makes the students fit and dynamic to work in odd and
heterogenous atmosphere and also learn to approach those people who are very
different from us in many ways.
The Department has also established the centre for Tribal/Backward cast
research and preservation of the cultural heritage. The Postgraduate
students also play a role part in editing our Departmental Agricultural
Anthropology Journal.
Efforts are made to enable Anthropologists to work among Agriculturists.
Agriculturists in present times are reviving a vast area of Indian
agricultural land. Under such conditions anthropologists are capable of
tackling the situation. Anthropologist are expert at work amongst urban and
rural people because they study man in a holistic way. Since a large part of
the population of country is underdeveloped, Anthropology becomes a
necessity for the welfare of human beings.
Research activities
The Department is well known for its research Excellence in various areas of
Anthropology. Doctoral research is guided by the faculty in Medical
Anthropology Economic Anthropology, Social and Applied Anthropology, Medical
laboratory is available for the use of serological and blood testing. Our
focus of research is also on gender and empowerment in various part of
India, viz Northen region of India, (Humachal Pradesh, Haryana,) and
Southern region of Indian (Tamilnadu, Pondicherry, Andhra Pradesh) and
Bastar in the central region.
The library in holding numerous Anthropological books and publications many
of which are rare, Students are encouraged to use the department
library.Identification library (Human skeleton), is also available.
This library provides students a better understanding of biology of human
being and it trains the students in forensic anthropology; it contains most
of the equipment required for learning the histomorphometric analysis and
osteology of the bone and make additional studies of skeletons.
