Department of Library & Information Science

The Library awareness in the present context is rapidly growing in the country. Consequently there is an increase in the establishment and expansion of various libraries, viz academic, public and special due to this factor the demand for qualified personnel, trained in various aspects of librarianship has in the region to meet the needs of the knowledge based society.
The Department of library and Information science was established under the Faculty of Humanities, Social Sciences, Arts and Culture in 2001. The Department has adopted the National Information Policy norms in the formulation of the Bachelor's Degree and Master's Degree in Library and Information Science.
The Bachelor's Degree in Library Science was converted into Bachelor's Degree in Library and Information Science in the same year. The Department has been conducting the BLISc and MLISc program since then. It is the perception of the department that BLISc program should not only treat the classification, Cataloguing, reference service, documentation and Information Technology as essential skills required in the present day librarianship, but also emphasize “Sociology foundations” and “Cultural responsibility” of the profession. The Department has taken case to introduce and emphasize new concepts with adequate coverage while revising the syllabus. As a result of modern technological impact, the Department has also incorporated a paper on “ Computer Application” in Library in Information Science “ at BLISc level in 2001, Which was later in 2004 changed to Information Technology Application” Trainning in Library Science was instituted at the university in 2001 so far, over 130 students have completed their training in Library and Information Science from the University.
Most of the alumni have continued in the profession and many of them are occupying positions of responsibility in academic and special libraries.
The Master's program is designed to widen the student perspective through direct and independent study. It lays stress on proper appreciation of trends rather than technical skills like classification and cataloguing. The dissertation work gives the student a proper grounding in technical writing. The total course in envisaged to enable him / her to organize library services in furtherance of institutional objectives.
Students need to conduct practicals mainly based on cataloguing and classification system. It has a well organized library. The Department of Library and Information science carries research in the area of Library Automation, Library Cataloguing, Library Classification and Retrieval Techniques.
