The Department of Biological Sciences is one of the
oldest and most active department of College of Basic Sciences. Our mission
is to achieve excellence in our scholarly pursuits and in our teaching and
training of undergraduate and postgraduate students. The programmes are
designed to meet the needs of students with variety of career goals. The
curriculum is rigorous and provides a background in critical thinking,
research and communication skills. Field trips are a common feature of some
classes. Our postgraduate majors have successfully entered careers in the
life sciences in public, private and non-profit organizations. The past
records have shown cent percent placement of our postgraduates. The
department offers academic programs leading to a Bachelor of Science (B.
Sc.), Master of Science (M. Sc.), Master of Philosophy (M. Phil.) and Doctor
of Philosophy (Ph. D.) degrees.
Lab Facilities
Teaching laboratories provide extensive student experience with living
organisms and experimental equipment. Laboratory sections are kept small to
ensure student interaction with teaching staff. The Laboratories in the
department of Biological Sciences are well equipped with Spectrophotometers,
Flame Photometer, Electrophoresis units, UV Irradiation chambers/units,
Culture room, digital pH meters, autoclaves, centrifuges, incubators,
shakers, apart from other minor equipments and instruments needed to carry
out researches in the thrust areas.
Research Activities
Major thrust areas of research of the Department are Bioprospecting of
Cyanobacteria, Stress Physiology, Population Genetics, Plant-Microbe
Interaction, Microbial Enzymes and Bioremediation.
