Bioinformatics an offshoot of the convergence of
Biotechnology and Information Technology, has been attaining rapid
developments in India. The progression of bioinformatics over the last
twenty years, from initial programs and simulations to the rich set of tools
now available, is mirrored in the rapid growth in specialized fields viz.
genomics, proteomics, metabolomics and the drive to sequence more and more
species every year. Being an interface between modern biology and
informatics it involves discovery, development and implementation of
computational algorithms and software tools that facilitate an understanding
of the biological processes with the goal to serve primarily agriculture and
healthcare sectors with several spin-offs. Pro-active policies and conducive
environment to researchers, entrepreneurs and Industry will go a long way in
steering India towards leadership in the area of Bioinformatics and
Computational Biology.
Lab Facilities
Bioinformatics Laboratory is fully air-conditioned and equipped with P-IV
computers, software packages with uninterrupted power supply. High speed
Internet connection with LAN is available round the clock.
Research Activities
The Department supports a wide array of research areas and is mainly focused
on the analytical and developmental activities. Themes that underpine the
overall research strategy are sequence pattern recognition, transcriptomics,
regulatory region prediction and characterization, splicing site
recognition, gene prediction, complete genome comparisons, biolinguistics,
phylogenetic analysis, structural genomics ,systems biology, biological
networks, proteomics, protein annotation, models of evolution , molecular
modeling and drug designing.
