Today global biotechnology research is targeted to benefit farmers, food processors, health professionals and consumers. Tissue culture is the basic foundation of biotechnology. It has aided in the development of many important new methods of diagnosis and therapy in human healthcare and, increasingly, new approaches to solving problems in agriculture like gene revolution in many crop plants, bringing improvement in productivity, product quality, resistance to stress, better keeping qualities and to reduce post harvest losses.
Amongst the various plant tissue culture techniques applicable to plant improvement, micro propagation is of much commercial significance as an alternative means to traditional vegetative propagation. Its major importance lies in the fast multiplication of newly developed varieties, rare hybrids, genetically modified plants, true homozygous stocks, etc. in a short time and space, irrespective of seasons and climatic conditions. Animal cell lines have been used extensively for the production of a variety of therapeutic and prophylactic protein products including hormones, cytokines, enzymes, antibodies and vaccines.

Lab Facilities
The department is enriched with two fully air conditioned, fully furnished laboratories viz. Tissue Culture Research Lab and Tissue Culture Technology Lab. We have sufficient equipments and other requirements for all the students learning tissue culture.

Research activities

The present tissue culture work involves training, research and practical education to students with various techniques. The department is presently undertaking research work in the rapid propagation of various fruit, forest and economically important crops like Bamboo, Guava, Banana, Apple, Kinnow, Stevia, Jatropha, etc.
