The impact of Biotechnology is increasingly being felt in
every sphere of human activity. It opens up new avenues to view the
biological processes from a molecular window and explains the basic
principles of life in terms of the structure and function of biological
molecules. As a result, the application of Molecular Biology and Genetic
Engineering has been extended from agriculture, food, pharmacology,
medicine, biomedical industry and forensic science to bioengineering. The
pace of extraordinary advances in molecular biology has accelerated in the
past decade due to the discoveries emerging from genome projects of human
and other model organisms. The transfer of comprehensive genome information
to the next level of characterization of structure and function signals a
new maturity in biology. The convergence of biology to the next level of
characterization ensures that these areas of biology are genuinely endowed
with computational complexity beyond just data management and organization.
The simultaneous revolutions of genomics and computing therefore has given
rise to a new breed of researcher whose knowledge and expertise span the
biological, physical, mathematical, engineering and computing sciences
disciplines. The Department offers various undergraduate, Post graduate and
Doctoral academic programs through a comprehensive curriculum, which equips
students with theoretical knowledge and practical skills in different
biotechnology disciplines.
Lab Facilities
There are separate laboratories equipped for undergraduate, postgraduate and
doctoral research in the modern areas of molecular biology.
Research Activities
The Department carries research in Molecular marker analysis, marker
assisted breeding of crop plants, gene transformation in crop plants,
staining properties of natural florescent pigments and in the biology of
cyanophages.
