Food and Fibers are essential for human survival and these are produced
through agricultural and allied activities. At present India produces more
than 400 millions of tones of food items of plant and animal origin which
are transformed into edible product through post-harvest processing starting
from production till consumption. Further, India is the largest producer of
fruit and second largest producer of vegetables in the world. About 5- 50%
of the food items get loss during post harvest processing and the extend of
loss depends on the type of food commodity. At least about 50% of this post
harvest loss could be prevented using appropriate post harvest technology
and processing equipments.
The Courses offered in the Department deals with handling, processing and
preservation problems of raw agricultural and food materials.
Lab Facilities
The department has food engineering & food processing laboratories with
different sections catering to the curriculum needs. The food engineering
lab has various sections such as Drying, Quality Control, Packaging,
Engineering Properties of Food Materials etc. The food processing lab
consists of multi-line food processing section, milling lab, pilot potato
processing plant etc. This multi-line food processing consists of canning
line, Fruit juicer line and other facilities like embossing, juice/pulp
concentrating, sealing & capping machineries.
Research Activities
The Department is deeply involved in conducting basic as well as applied
research on various aspects of food process engineering. The major thrust
areas are Dehydration of fruits and vegetables, Modified atmosphere
packaging of fruits, Feasibility studies on food processing industries,
Optimization models of food processing, Development of low cost food
processing equipments, By-products utilization, Process optimization of
traditional fermented foods, Recent trends in food packaging, Development of
functional food, Development of fruit based beverages, Drying of cereals and
pulses.
