The Department of Plant Protection
was established to carry out basic and applied aspects of research, teaching
and training in the field of plant pathology, entomology and nematology. The
department has thrust areas such as integrated pest/disease management,
biological control of insects and diseases, pesticide toxicology,
bio-pesticides, mushroom production etc. The department has a well
established Referral Laboratory under the aegis of DBT, Govt. of India. This
laboratory is specialized in mass production of bio-pesticides.
Lab Facilities
There are three laboratories namely Advanced Microbial Lab, Tissue Culture
Lab and Molecular Lab. The Department has basic infra-structure, laboratory
equipment for modern and advanced research, audio-visual teaching aids like
LCD projector, CCTV attachment with microscope, microphotography equipment,
electron microscope, and binocular dissection microscope etc. for formal
teaching of Under Graduate, Post Graduate and Ph.D. programmes.
Research Activities
The department has successfully completed 29 projects and three are in
progress sponsored by UGC, ICAR, DST, DBT (Govt of India) New Delhi, UPCST
and UPCAR Lucknow
The department is actively involved in Molecular mapping of gene and
breeding for resistance to Meloidogyne graminicola in rice, Management of
fusarium wilt disease of important crops, to develop Integrated pest
management module and also maintaining agriculturally important micro
organisms which includes plant pathogen (fungi, bacteria and nematodes).
fungal and bacterial antagonists including native isolates (Trichoderma sp.
Pseudomanas sp. Bacillus sp. etc) entomo-pathogenic micro organism, (Metarhizium
anisopliae, Beauveria bassiana, Verticillium lecanii, Paecilomyces sp.
Bacillus thuringiensis etc, Entomopathogenic nematodes Steinernema,
Hetrorhabditis sp.) and economically important mushrooms (Pleurotus sp,
Agaricus sp Calocybe sp. etc.) for the purpose of training and research. |
