The Department of Horticulture was
established soon after the B.Sc. (Ag.) degree (Two years) programme was
approved by the University of Allahabad in the year 1932 under the guidance
of Prof. W. B. Hayes. Besides teaching and research activities extension
activities related to fundamental principles growing and management of
horticultural crops including plantation crops and post harvest technology
is imparted to the students. The post graduate programme in horticulture
leading to M.Sc. (Ag.) degree was started in 1970.
Lab facilities
The Post Graduate and Under Graduate laboratory (Experiential Learning Lab)
are well equipped with new equipments which are computerized. It meets the
requirement of research being conducted for Post Graduate as well as Ph.D.
programmes. The undergraduate students are provided on-hand experience on
different horticultural crops at the Crop Research unit. The Society of
Horticulture regularly organizes study tours, special lectures and quiz
competition etc., for members of the Society.
Research Activities
The research activities are mainly focused on thrust areas like
Identification and development of drought resistant varieties/germplasm in
fruits, vegetables, flowers, spices, medicinal and aromatic plant.
Introduction of Psidium species and allied species from exotic sources for
their testing against wilt and graft compatibility with commercial
cultivars. Screening of suitable varieties / germplasm of vegetables,
flowers and medicinal plants for sodic soil. Standardization of agro
techniques for cucurbits cultivation on Diara land (River bed Cultivation).
Standardization of micro irrigation techniques for commercial production of
fruits, vegetable and flowers. Integrated nutrient management for fruit
crops, vegetables and flower crops. Organic and precision farming for
sustainable production of horticultural corps. Nutrients requirement for
some fruit crops like Guava, Aonla, Bael, Phalsa, Jamun etc. under sodic
soil condition. Standardization of macro & micronutrient requirement for
fruits, vegetables and flowers. Standardization of post harvest techniques
for improving / prolonging the shelf life of fruits, vegetables and flowers.
To find out the feasibility of intercropping with fruits, vegetables,
flowers & medicinal and aromatics plants. Introduction and standardization
of package & practices for exotic and underutilized horticultural crops.
Hybridization / selection of early mango varieties which could match the
time of availability of Baganpalli, in U. P. with high quality and
productivity. Bringing down fruiting near the ground in commercial varieties
of Mango under the high density plantation technique. Comparative economic
study of use of herbicides as against manual weeding in vegetable and flower
crop production. Evolving the solution for softening of Mango pulp near the
stone. |
