Agronomy is the backbone of
agricultural education and this department is one of the first to be
established in the University. It train students the concepts of basic
agriculture and crop production and farming knowledge through rigorous
practical and theory classes. Apart from undergraduate programme it offers
postgraduate degree in Agronomy including Ph.D. The department has latest
research facilities and encourages students to have sustained on hand
experience on field crop management. All subjects in agriculture are
interrelated to agronomy.
Lab facilities
The postgraduate laboratories are equipped with latest equipments which are
computer aided and digitalized. It meets the requirements of research being
conducted for Postgraduate as well as Ph.D. programmes. The undergraduate
students are provided on-hand experience on certain aspects of Crop
Production Research. They are supported to undergo experiential learning at
various Research Stations and Institutes and present their reports and
experiences for performance evaluation.
Research Activities
The research activities are mainly focused on thrust areas like Organic
Farming, Integrated Nutrient Management, Integrated Weed Management,
Varietal performance studies of different crops, Inter-Cropping Systems and
also introduction of new Crops like babycorn and underutilized Crops like
Ragi, Kodo, (Minor millets), Ramie, Sisal (minor Fibre crops) apart from SRI
(System of Rice Intensification) for higher yields & conserving water,
nutrient and energy. New techniques of plant management like FIRBS (Furrow
Irrigated Raised Bed System) and use of foliar nutrition for effective
nutrient management are some new areas of research. Several projects are
also being undertaken. The recent ones includes National Project on Organic
Farming sponsored by Ministry of Agriculture, Govt. of India, through the
National Centre of Organic Farming, Ghaziabad. Prof. (Dr.) Thomas Abraham is
the Principal Investigator of this project sanctioned in 2008. This project
mainly comprises of three components which include Model Organic Farm,
Training Programmes at University and Field Demonstration in the farmers
field. Revolving Fund Scheme for Production of Breeder Seeds, Foundation and
Certified Seed of cereals, millets, oilseeds and fodder crops sponsored by
ICAR, New Delhi. Prof. (Dr.) Mohd. Kaleem is the Principal Investigator of
this project and Dr. Gautam Ghosh is the Co-PI. |
