Department of Home
Economics came into existence in the year 1932. In 1997 Home Economics
Department became the College of Home Science & Women's Development and
later on renamed as Halina School of Home Science.
The School works towards the objective of imparting Home Science education
to promote cognitive and effective learning among students for technology
transport to both urban and rural families within the culturally relevant
conditions and eco-based farm household system. It aims to strengthen
teaching- extension-research linkages through family and community focused
research for holistic improvement to enhance the quality of life of rural
and urban families at micro, meso and macro levesl of the society, with
added emphasis on promoting professionalism among students.
The four departments (Foods and Nutrition, Clothing and Textiles, Family
Resource Management and Human Development & Family Studies) have a great
deal to offer to those who are interested in higher education in the field
of Home Science. The department offers M.Sc and Ph.D programmes in addition
to the undergraduate programmes in Home Science as well as a Diploma course
in Fashion Technology.
Ever since the four years B.Sc Home Science Honours programme has been
introduced, pioneering strides have been made in promoting professional
education for students in the form of elective packages in all the four
areas of specialization in Home Science. In addition, the students also
undergo In-plant training/Internship and Rural Awareness Work
Experience(RAWE) keeping in mind the changing needs and times of the era.
The Halina School of Home Science (earlier the Dept. of Home Economics) is
about 66 years old and one of the oldest in imparting Home Science education
in the country. The School offers immense opportunities through its various
departments.
Department of Foods and Nutrition
Department of Food and Nutrition develops knowledge and skills in micro and
macro management of foods for ensuring nutritional security and safeguarding
human health. The department trains students as food scientists and
nutritionists in an integrated manner to fulfill multifarious roles required
of an institutionalist/dietitian/ scientist in the professional arena.
The department is committed to research areas of nutrition intervention to
combat major nutritional deficiencies/ disorders, development and impact
assessment of nutrition communication material, anti nutritional factors in
selected foods, formulation and standardization of therapeutic foods,
dehydration of vegetables and their product formulation.
Department of Human Development and Family Studies
Department of Human Development and Family Studies focuses on developing
knowledge and skills regarding developmental stages of life cycle,
provisioning of stimulative environment for human development and management
of micro and macro resources for care of family and children with special
needs.
It offers various courses that focus on the trends of the different phases
of human growth from conception to old age. It trains and prepares students
through theory and practical work to understand and deal with various
developmental stages of the life cycle and their personality development.
The research areas include family relationships and child rearing practices,
children with special needs, behavioral problems and personality
development, human rights and gender issues.
Department of Family Resource Management
Department of Family Resource Management develops knowledge of micro and
macro family resources with emphasis on development of skills for management
of eco-friendly household technologies for work simplification; for space
management and aesthetic enrichment of the house and empowerment with
knowledge on family finance and consumer education.
It concentrates on various aspects of management of resources, household
technology for work simplification, space management and aesthetic
enrichment of the house. It also aims to give intensive training in the area
of housing and interior design, emphasis on development of skills for
management of family finance, designing of low cost furniture for persons
with special needs, solar energy technology, ergonomical assessment of
household activities and drudgery prone activities, as well as computer
aided interior designing.
Department of Clothing and Textiles
Department of Clothing and Textiles develops knowledge of textiles and
skills in apparel designing and clothing construction, value addition to
apparels and eco-friendly textiles products, clothing for special needs;
knowledge of traditional textiles and skills in textiles technologies for
starting micro-enterprises in the context of the modern world of varied
fashion and fabrics. The course programme offered is quite relevant and need
based.
The department helps develop professionalism for fashion/ garments/textile
industry. Research is being carried out in value addition of textiles by
dyeing, printing and finishing, bio-polishing of non-conventional fibers for
product development, , blending of fibers to enhance fabric properties,
garment construction and designing through CAD (Computer Aided Designing).
A diploma programme in Fashion Technology is also offered.
Laboratory facilities
The School has well-equipped laboratory facilities with modern technology to
impart hands on practical training to the students. Experiential learning is
through the various laboratories of the Departments - Foods Lab, Nutrition
Lab, Nutrition Research Lab(PG), Diet Counselling Lab, Catering Management
Lab, Psychometric Testing Lab, Material Development Lab, Textile Dyeing and
Testing Lab, Garment Construction Lab, Apparel and Fashion Designing Lab,
Interior Designing Lab, Ergonomics Lab and Extension Education Lab

Researches carried out in the four areas of specialization of Home Science

Foods & Nutrition: Dehydration of vegetables and their product formulation,
Development and impact assessment of nutrition communication material to
popularize enriched products from traditional foods, Nutrition intervention
to combat major nutritional deficiencies/ disorders in UP, Anti nutritional
factors in selected foods, Formulation and standardization of therapeutic
foods
Generation of data on degenerative diseases.
Clothing & Textiles: Value addition of Textiles by dyeing, printing and
finishing Biopolishing of non-conventional fibres for product development,
Extraction and processing of natural dyes, Designing apparels through CAD,
Blending of fibres to enhance fabric properties, Garment construction and
designing
Family Resource Management: Low cost designing of mobility aids for children
with cerebral palsy, Solar energy technology Ergonomic evaluation, Computer
Aided Interior Designing
Human Development & Family Studies: Child rearing practices, Early childhood
