Dear AGGIES,
The Centenary Celebrations are being organized to
mark one hundred illustrious years of Sam
Higinbottom Institute for the leadership in
Agricultural sciences, technology and innovation.
The establishment of this ecumenical Institute by
Dr. Sam Higginbottom was an important landmark in
expanding traditions of scientific research in India
during twentieth and twenty-first centuries. His
contribution, his association with stalwarts of
India, his love for the lepers and his concern for
the poor has installed this Institute to national
and International platform. The Institute has always
been an enduring symbol of the very best in Indian
scientific research and has assiduously maintained
the highest standards of academic excellence,
matching the best in the world. Years have traveled
further, many more visionaries like Er. Masan Vaugh,
Dr. J.L. Goheen, Dr. A.T. Mosher, Mr. W.B.Hayes, Mr.
James N. Warner, Dr. Henery S. Azariah , Dr.
J.B.Chitamber and Rev.Prof.(Dr.) Rajendra B.Lal have
provided an ascending and positive growth to this
fore-runner Institute.
Ministry of Human Resource and Development,
Government of India, looking upon magnificent glory
and achievements of the institute declared it as
Deemed to be University on 15th March 2000. The
dream of the founder was fulfilled by a visionary
and founder Vice Chancellor, Rev. Prof.(Dr.)
Rajendra B.Lal of this Institution. Offering honour
to the Dr. Sam Higginbottom, it is now known as
Sam Higinbottom Institute of Agriculture, Technology
& Sciences (SHIATS). SHIATS being a professional Institution of
the country enjoys 100 years of Lord’s amazing grace
and has served the mankind globally. The Institution
concentrates on instruction, while seeking to
combine the classic goals of intellectual
development with “Serve the Land”. Dr. Sam
Higginbottom, was inspired by the vision of “Gospel
& Plough” and professed that the teaching of the
spiritual values of life in accordance with the
command of Lord Jesus Christ is necessary with
technology teaching / transfer. SHIATS is installed
on its historic mission of “Feed the Hungry” and
providing education to a student body that is
diversed in terms of ethnicity, national origin, and
socio-economic background. At SHIATS the community
of dedicated professors, scientists and staff
instill a high level of competence in our students
by offering distinctive undergraduate, post
graduate, doctoral and diploma programmes that
embrace academic excellence and practical knowledge
clubbed with professional ethics.
Completing a century of service to the society is a
rare achievement for an institution, which has
ascended like a crescent moon. Established in 1910,
SHIATS has grown, weathering many storms and passing
through various vicissitudes from an Institute to a
degree awarding Institution with a loyal alumni
network in the country and aboard. The centenary
celebrations of SHIATS are from 27th October 2009 to
27th October 2010. It will be marked by several
national level events focusing on the Institute's
contributions to fundamental and applied scientific
research, its role in creating and nurturing
scientific institutions, its place as a rich source
of talented scientific manpower, and its future role
in the Indian society with major aspirations to take
its rightful place in the global order. During this
period alumni, present students, faculty, the
scientific fraternity worldwide and the civil
society in general will be joining the series of
national level centenary events, so as to meet their
seniors, contemporaries, juniors and their families.
Thus the inspiration poured into the campus by its
founder will be not only treasured but also used as
motivation for further growth of this Institution
and its diversified offerings. On the whole the
centenary celebrations will be dedicated to the
ruler masses of India, in tune with the vision of
the great founder. After One hundred years, we can
look back at the glorious history of the past and
the illustrious AGGIES who brought laurels to the
Institute and have gone further on to make a mark in
the world.
On behalf of Hon’ble Chancellor, Hon’ble Vice
Chancellor, faculty, staff and students of the
Institute, I invite you and your family to celebrate
one hundred years of striving, one hundred years of
achieving and one hundred years of glory.
