Mission: The mission of the Institute will be to understand and improve
animal welfare and the associated ethical issues. In India this will be done
through teaching, research, legislation and training. The Institute proposes
to encompass:
• Half-way house refuge for non-claimed cattle wondering on the road-side;
• Increased awareness of animal welfare and Ethical issues;
• Promoting indigenous breeds of cattle from a nucleus base.
Objectives
• To study the welfare of animals and ethical issues concerned with their
management in Uttar Pradesh.
Through scientific evaluation in India and
other countries we can learn to improve our animal management practices;
• To demonstrate leadership in animal welfare and ethical issues, and to
ensure that staff, undergraduate and
postgraduate students are aware of new
developments in the field;
• To improve the level of understanding of animal welfare by the general
public and in the university community by
contributing to courses in animal
welfare and ethics;
• To encourage animal welfare issues to be included in the breeder context
of animal husbandry,
environment and human behavior research.
In order to provide leadership and advice on animal welfare issues, the
Institute will be building effective networks with all stakeholders
including local, state, and central governments:
• Leaders in the primary and intensive farming industries;
• Professional associations such as Veterinary Council and its state
branches, as well as Veterinary Council of India;
• Existing animal welfare institutions;
• Organizations supporting improvements to the welfare of animals.
Animal Welfare Institute in conjunction with College of Veterinary Science
will be aiming to increase awareness and welfare of animals kept for
companionship (e.g. cats and dogs and other pet animals) and those used in
intensive and extensive animal industries. The Institute will also be
involved in suggesting refinement techniques for handling livestock and will
also be working to increase the welfare of animals housed for conservation
purposes (e.g. zoos, wildlife sanctuaries and wildlife refuge) and research.
